  • Childcare Solutions at the Forefront: Addressing Workforce Challenges at the 2024 Policy Summit

As North Dakota continues to grapple with workforce challenges, the 2024 GNDC Policy Summit is bringing much-needed attention to one of the most critical issues impacting the state's business climate: childcare accessibility and affordability. With 71% of Greater North Dakota Chamber members identifying these concerns as significant hurdles for their organizations, it’s clear that solutions are urgently needed to support both working families and employers.

At this year’s summit, the Childcare Solutions: Assessing Impacts on North Dakota's Workforce panel aims to address these concerns head-on. The discussion, featuring insights from state leaders and industry experts, will provide a comprehensive assessment of the recent legislative efforts and explore how businesses can contribute to meaningful progress.

The 2023 Legislature’s $65.6 million investment in childcare was a historic step toward alleviating the crisis, but the question remains: has it been enough? Moderator Anna Nelson, newly appointed Executive Director of Williston Economic Development Corp, will guide this vital conversation, bringing her extensive experience in business and community leadership to the table.

    • Panelist Sen. Kathy Hogan, a seasoned public servant with a deep understanding of educational and workforce issues, will provide a legislative perspective on how this funding is being implemented and what additional measures might be necessary to further support working families and employers.

    • From the business side, Cindy Griffin, VP of HR & Corporate Services for Harvestone Low Carbon Partners, will share her experience navigating workforce challenges within her organization and discuss the broader implications for North Dakota’s economy. As the chair of the ND Workforce Development Council, Griffin’s insights will be invaluable in understanding how businesses have engaged with these legislative initiatives.

    • Emily Klym, CFO of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, has played a crucial role in developing solutions to workforce challenges, including establishing a daycare to address the needs of a childcare desert. With a strong passion for the intersection of policy and business issues, Emily brings valuable perspective into how businesses can actively engage in addressing broader community needs.

    • Following the panel, Andy Reierson, CEO of Flint Group, will provide a business response, reacting to the insights shared and offering perspectives on how the private sector can play a pivotal role in driving policy decisions that promote economic growth and prosperity.

    WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERS

With a significant portion of the workforce being parents of young children, the availability and affordability of childcare directly impact workforce participation and productivity. For businesses, the lack of accessible childcare options can lead to increased turnover, absenteeism, and difficulties in attracting and retaining talent.

This panel is not just a discussion; it’s a call to action. By bringing together leaders from various sectors, the GNDC Policy Summit aims to foster collaboration and drive the development of effective, long-term solutions. As North Dakota moves forward, addressing childcare challenges will be essential to building a stronger, more resilient workforce capable of supporting the state’s continued growth and prosperity.
