CEO Roundtable - December 2021 - Ec Dev and Diversification
Growth and prosperity are the direct results of thoughtful economic development. When done thoughtfully, communities prosper enriching the lives of their citizens through job creation, increased tax revenue, and enhanced quality of life. This CEO Roundtable will focus on the success stories themed around economic development and diversification. Attendees will also hear about available resources at the state and local level that understand the importance of positively positioning businesses.

Prior to the pandemic, CEO Roundtables were in-person events that were a staple for GNDC members to connect and share insights. We are excited to begin to re-introduce these educational networking opportunities. Please register in advance to reserve space as well as confirm your lunch.

SPEAKER BIOS
RYAN JILEK - STARK DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION: Ryan started his career as a business professional and entrepreneur with over 22 years of experience as a Dickinson, North Dakota-based small business owner and employer before taking on the Executive Vice-President role with Stark Development Corporation (SDC). With SDC, Ryan has been active with workforce and business recruitment and expansion, as well as, strengthening an environment that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship. Ryan attended Dickinson Catholic Schools, Dickinson State University and graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. As a lifelong resident of Stark County, Ryan enjoys a deeply rooted awareness of the region, its communities, and residents.
TERRI THIEL - DICKINSON CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU: Terri has been the Executive Director of the Dickinson Convention & Visitors Bureau since the fall of 1997. She is a Past President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Destination Marketing Association of North Dakota. She has been a member of the SW ND Economic Developers since the group organized in 1994, regionally collaborating on economic projects in southwest North Dakota. Terri is a past and current member of numerous other Boards/Committees in Dickinson, and southwest North Dakota that have grown tourism programs and projects through the years.
CARTER FONG - DICKINSON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Carter Fong began as the new Executive Director of the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce in May of 2021. He is a Dickinson native and a graduate of Dickinson High School and North Dakota State University. Previously, he spent 12 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator at Dickinson Trinity High School and two years as an insurance agent for the Knights of Columbus. He has a Master's degree in Secondary School Administration from the University of Mary. He and his wife Stephanie reside in Dickinson with their three children.
JESSIE VEEDER - VEEDER RANCH: Jessie Veeder has been a symbol of folk music in Western North Dakota since she released her first original album when she was only sixteen years old. It was an effort that took her from performing at fairs and festivals around her home state to managing a national college and coffeehouse tour and launching a music career that landed her in Nashville to record her fourth original album. Since then she has become a statewide columnist, author, and mother to two young daughters. Jessie is a founding member of McKenzie County's Long X Arts Foundation where she has served as the director for over three years. She works to help create and promote cultural and arts-based activities in her hometown, blending her love and connection to the arts with her drive to make her community a better place to work and live. Her professional work in the community also extends into Tourism and Economic Development, where she works with community organizations to create events and opportunities that focus on quality of life in Western North Dakota. Jessie has served on the board of the North Dakota Humanities Council, is a member of the North Dakota Cattlewomen's Association, and has served on advisory panels throughout the state.
KAYLEN HAUSAUER - BANK OF NORTH DAKOTA: Kaylen Hausauer has been with Bank of North Dakota since May of 2012, primarily in the role of a business banker. Currently, her focus is working with financial institutions in the southwest North Dakota on commercial and agriculture participation requests as well as directly with individuals regarding bank stock lending. A Bismarck native, she has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Jamestown as well as a Master’s Degree from the University of Mary.
DAVE KLEPPE - PTAC: Dave joined the North Dakota PTAC program in 2014 after retiring from a North Dakota state agency where he was responsible for the agency fiscal management, procurement, information technology, human resources and training components. As the PTAC program manager, Dave has taken a leading role in developing a client base across the state. He has been building key relationships with program resource partners, state agencies and other organizations (ND Dept. of Commerce, ND State Procurement, Impact Dakota, US SBA ND District and regional federal agencies/Air Force bases, economic development agencies, institutions of higher ed and tribal communities). Dave holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Bemidji State University with a concentration in Business Administration. He also graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Police, Staff and Command.
TYLER DEMARS - ND SBDC: A Minot native, Demars holds a bachelor's degree in Management and a Master's degree in Strategic Leadership, both from the University of Mary in Bismarck. In his 15+ years of business management and development experience, he’s established a broad skill set including feasibility analysis, go-to-market strategy development, operations management, community & economic development, and non-profit leadership. Demars serves as Specialty Services Director for the ND Small Business Development Centers.
RICH GARMAN - ND DEPT. OF COMMERCE: Rich Garman is currently the Deputy Director of Economic Development & Finance. He oversees the Commerce Departments' energy portfolio of projects that exceeds $15B. Rich has over 31 years of experience managing projects. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and advanced degrees in Business Administration and Project Management from the University of Mary. Rich is a registered Project Management Professional (PMP).
PETER MATTHAEI - DAKOTA SPECIALTY MILLING: Peter is the CEO of Dakota Specialty Enterprises. He is the fifth generation Matthaei running the family companies in the US. Dakota Specialty Milling in Fargo is a leader in providing custom milled, blended, and toasted ingredients to the wholesale baking and snack manufacturing sector. Working with both local and imported grains they supply their products throughout both the US and world. Peter feels very fortunate to have a great team around him that desires to continue to innovate and grow in the specialty milling, blending, and toasting industry. Peter is a graduate of Washington State University, and earned his MBA at North Dakota State. Peter is a GNDC Board Member.
JAKEE STOLTZ - NORTHERN PLAINS UAS TEST SITE: Jakee manages NPUASTS in-state outreach efforts and drone workforce development. Because the NPUASTS is a part of the North Dakota Department of Commerce, one of our objectives - in line with our mission to help the Federal Aviation Administration in the National Airspace System - is to help public agencies use UAS to improve efficacy and efficiency of their existing missions. Jakee was previously the Director of Operations for the organization. Prior to joining the NPUASTS, Jakee was a flight instructor for University of North Dakota (UND) Flight Operations, supported UND UAS research with the Air Force Research Lab, and served as a pilot on the Northeast Regional UAS Team. Jakee holds a Commercial Pilot Certificate, a CFII certificate, and a Remote Pilot Certificate.
