  • Demystifying the Legislative Process: A Primer for Beginners

Understanding the legislative process can feel like diving into a sea of jargon and procedures. GNDC is offering a primer to help navigate the water for understanding the basic rules that govern the rule-making process of our state.

ND Legislative Session 101 is our introductory primer aimed at breaking down the complex world of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly into digestible, easy-to-understand pieces. This session is perfect for those new to the topic, whether you're looking to get involved in policy-making or just want to be "in the know" as the 69th Legislative Assembly kicks off.

    HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

    • An Overview of the Legislative Session: Learn about the 80-day session, why it’s structured the way it is, and what happens in those intense few months.
    • Understanding the Basics: We’ll cover the fundamentals – from how a bill becomes law to the roles of the 141 legislators across the 2 chambers. We didn’t love the name “Legislative Assembly for Dummies” but the idea is there.
    • Breaking Down the Jargon: Terms like “Sine Die,” “caucus,” and “A-committees” will no longer feel like a foreign language. We’ll translate the insider lingo into plain English, creating comfort with the terms that come up during session.
    • The Legislative Roadmap: Get a clear picture of the journey a bill takes from introduction to final approval, and understand the key players and committees that influence the outcome.
